PlayStation 3 Sales Up 118% Year On Year

Earlier this week, Sony announced their financial and figures from the first quarter of the fiscal year – with the fiscal year ending on March 31st 2011. The figures indicate the company has made an operating income of $753 million with a net income of $289 million.

As for sales, the PlayStation 3 sold 2.4 million units in the first quarter, compared with 1.1 million units last year – an increase of 118%. Sales for the PSP were slightly down, selling 1.2 million units compares to 1.3 million last year. Surprisingly, the PS2 sales figure remained the same, at 1.6 million units.

PlayStation 3 software sales went up from 14.8 million to 24.8 million units, and PSP sales were also up from 8.3 million to 9.2 million units. PS2 sales were down from 8.5 million units to 3.4 million.

The global PS3 sales figure now stands at 38.1 million units, approximately 3 million units behind the Xbox 360. Sony is expecting to move another 12.6 million units before the end of the fiscal year (to achieve a total of 15 million units).

PS3 will seel over 100 million units in it's life time, just like the PSOne and the PS2. In fact the PS2 is still selling and has sold way over 140 million units! The original Xbox sold under 30 million and the 360 is around 40 at this time. I think the 360 will have a more impressive life cycle than the original but it is nowhere near the quality of the PS3 which just like PS2 will undoubtedly keep selling well after the next console is released.

Another reason other than better exclusives, better controler, blu ray and free online play to buy the PS3 is because when the next Xbox comes out (which will be before Sony) they are sure to down all the servers, service and support for the 360 in a move to FORCE you to upgrade.
