Counter-Strike Update (CS: GO) To Launch On Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, Early 2012

by on August 12, 2011

Seven years from the last major update, twelve years since it was originally launched as a modification for Half-Life, Counter-Strike is to receive a multi-platform release under the name Counter-Strike: Global Offense.

To this day, Counter-Strike is still the most popular professional FPS game on the PC market. There’s no doubt this news will excite FPS fans and budding professional gamers worldwide.

In true Valve fashion, CS: GO will be sold via digital distribution models only. Launching on Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) early next year.

Hidden Path Entertainment – who previously worked with Valve’s dev studio last year on Counter-Strike Source updates -will be assisting in the development of CS: GO.

CS: GO is already in a playable state and will be presented at PAX Prime and London’s Eurogamer Expo. So you won’t have to wait long for some hands-on time!

So far we know the new features will include: maps, characters, weapons and re-releases of the classic CS content  such as de_dust. Matchmaking and leader-boards will feature in Counter-Strike for the first time with CS: GO, along with new gameplay modes.

Valve’s Doug Lombardi, VP of Marketing had this to say about CS: GO:

“Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999,”

“For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS’ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.”
