Gears of War 3 Will Support Stereoscopic 3D

The release of Gears of War 3 is etching ever closer and we are just a little excited. It is great then that Epic games has announced that Gears of War 3 will support Stereoscopic 3D, becoming the first of their games to do so. It joins the very short list of Stereoscopic games available to play on the Xbox 360. Despite this, the Unreal Engine has supported the feature for quite some time now leaving Epic Games with only one question. How do we make this work on Microsoft’s sleek little box without blowing it up!

“We asked, could we do it?” executive producer Rod Fergusson told Eurogamer.

“It’s still fledgling technology. It’s still a niche feature. But it was something we could support, so we felt, why not?”

To get this feature into that sexy little box Epic Games had to cut some corners because of the limited power available to the Xbox 360. Due to this the game is forced to output at a lower resolution then you would find in a Stereoscopic Playstation 3 game.

“It’s a little bit jaggier in certain areas,” Fergusson said. But the difference is “not huge”. “Instead of 720p you’re at five something,”  due to the need to have one image per eye to fool your brain into thinking it is seeing the screen in 3D.

“It was something that came in really late in our process. It wasn’t something where we said, OK, we’re going to design the game from the ground up for 3D. It was more of a post-process 3D, where we’re like, OK, certain things need to be adjusted, but for the most part it generally works.”

What does this mean for Gears of War players everywhere? We’ll if you don’t mind the hit to your resolution then you potentially have yourself a more immersion experience. The rest of the gaming masses will still get what is hopefully one of the most fun, action packed games this generation.

Now all we need to do is find ourselves a 3D TV!
