Gears of War 3 Sells More Than 3 Million in First Week, Franchise has Generated Over $1 Billion

by on September 29, 2011

Gears of War 3 has sold over three million copies in its first week on sale, Microsoft has announced. The Xbox 360 exclusive has become the biggest-selling title in 2011 so far with those impressive sales figures.

Gears of War is also the first Xbox 360 exclusive franchise to generate over $1 Billion in revenue. The massive sales were pushed by the midnight releases of Gears of War 3 in over 22,000 locations around the world, as well as a huge marketing campaign. Not to mention the widespread critical acclaim and awesome gameplay. We gave it a  10 out of 10 in our review.

“Gears of War was the first killer app for Xbox 360, and the series has continued to contribute directly to the overall success of the platform ever since,” said Microsoft Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer. “Gears of War 3 kicked off the biggest Christmas period in Xbox history, setting the standard for the kind of amazing, action-packed experiences gamers should expect on Xbox 360 this year.”

It will be interesting to see how many copies are sold after the Christmas period. Have you got Gears of War 3 yet? If not, tell us why in the comments.

Gears of War 3 is out now, exclusively for Xbox 360.
