Sony Still Optimistic About Vita

Sony Still Optimistic About VitaFor those that have dropped cold hard cash for a pre-order of Sony’s next handheld needn’t worry. Well, Sony’s John Koller isn’t jumping to conclusions just yet anyway. PlayStation Vita launched a couple of weeks back in Japan and hasn’t had a terrific time of it. After posting good numbers on its first week (approx. 325,000), it dropped in its second (approx. 72, 500) and third (approx. 42,000) week massively. Calm down dear PlayStation fan, this doesn’t mean the system is doomed.  Sony’s director of hardware marketing John Koller has expressed his optimism about the console in an interview with Gamespot at CES.

“If you look at the word-of-mouth factor, it’s really strong because people are bringing it home and really enjoying it…That satisfaction rate is really high. But also in terms of when we funnel in additional hardware units, that’ll dictate how many sales there are and how many sell through.”

“We’re still in the first couple weeks, and we’re trying to get as many units into market as possible. We’re going to give it some time, but overall those numbers have been to forecast”.

Koller also spoke about the 3DS, in a round about way. He addressed the fact that after 3DS’ launch, the software was lacking and he said that the Vita won’t suffer the same problem as Sony expect to keep the big games coming post-release.

“What we really wanted to do, and I think we learned from past, most recent, handheld device launches, is that you don’t want to launch strongly and then go dark for three or four months and have nothing…So in subsequent months for Vita, we have launch, then we have MLB, then we got Mortal Kombat, then Resistance, then Little Big Planet, then Call of Duty, and Assassin’s Creed.”

It is funny really. Sony try to distance themselves from the 3DS when it suits them, but upon seeing 3DS’ great finish to 2012, Sony are eager to get some of those sales themselves. You can check out the video interview below.
