New Retailer Promises to Share Profit from Pre-Owned Games

New-Retailer-Promises-to-Share-Profit-from-Pre-Owned-GamesEKGaming, a new online retailer in the US is promising to share the revenue it generates from used games with publishers.

The website says it wants to maintain and encourage what it calls the “circle of life” in gaming retail. In other words every time a pre-owned game is sold, they’ll give 10% of the profit back to the publisher. EKGaming have also said they’ll offer up to 30% more trade-in credit than that currently being offered by high street retailers.

CEO of EKGaming Mike Kennedy had this to say “Publishers are spending record amounts of cash on new game development. This increase in dev costs is causing them to take less risks on new and potentially exciting IP’s or game mechanics and sticking with tried and true properties that are more of a guarantee.”

Kennedy goes on to say “We want to share our used game revenue with them so they can continue investing in new gaming experiences without worrying about the negative effects used games could be having on their operations.”

So is this the end of online passes, sadly no. With most used games sold for under half RRP, 10% of the profit margin would be nowhere near the £10 generated by online passes. It is still a wonderful gesture though and one I’d love to see all retailers adopt.
