Former Sony Liverpool Devs Announce New Studio

A number of the unfortunate souls to lose their jobs with Sony five months ago after the closure of Sony Liverpool (formally Psygnosis) have today revealed details of a new studio.

The co founders of the new studio, which will be known as Soulfly Studios, are artist Jon Eggelton, lead programmer Andrew Jones, and former principle designers Mike Humphrey and Karl Jones. They have chosen to stay in Liverpool and are close to finishing their first game.

Speaking to theaveragegamer.com, managing director of the new studio Mike Humphrey said;

As soon as news went out about the studio closure we were all approached by large developers regarding new jobs. To be honest, our first instinct was to take positions with those relatively secure companies.”

Soulfly Studios are working on an original ip, and are open to taking on contracts from other publishers and sources. Mike went on to talk about having more control over the games they make;

However, the more we thought about it the more we realised that we had something more to contribute to the games industry. We knew that the only way to make our own games, exactly the way we wanted to make them, was to start our own studio. At Sawfly we want to create amazing and memorable gameplay experiences under our own terms, so that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

“We take a lot of inspiration from games like That Game Company’s Journey, and Playdead’s Limbo,” said Jon Eggelton. “Each of us had personal and compelling experiences with those games and those are the kind of experiences that we want to create ourselves. We don’t want to tick boxes just to get something out the door.”

We will keep tabs on the guys and look forward to playing the first Soulfly Studios game!
