The studio’s three-game deal with Sony expired following the releases of Flow, Flower and Journey, allowing them to develop for other platforms.

Chen made the announcement whilst speaking at this week’s DICE summit in Las Vegas.

He also revealed that the company was bankrupt at the time Journey was released, and that people were not being paid.

“I wouldn’t say that the development of Journey was a successful example of game development,” he said in an interview with Polygon. “We bankrupted the company.”

“I think to have a financial success, that is going to change everyone, it has to be much bigger than a game on the PlayStation platform.”

Appreciative of Sony’s support, he went on to discuss what the company wishes to achieve moving forward.

“We want to make more artistic games. High quality, emotional games.”

“I run into a lot of lost and frustrated students who study games to work on great art, but then find there is no place for them,” he continued. “I feel responsible for them because I showed them that it’s possible, but there is no place for them.”

Chen’s desire is for thatgamecompany to a place for such ambitious developers, and for that to happen he’s decided to develop for as wide a market as possible.
