Richard Garriott’s New RPG Has Raised 2 Million Dollars

shroud-of-the-avatar-300x250Shroud of the Avatar is a back to basics RPG from Mr. Ultima, Lord British, Bonkers Astronaut himself Richard Garriott and it has broken $2 million in crowd funding money.

Accepting donations through Kickstarter and via the Shroud of the Avatar website, the game has received the vast majority of its funding through Kickstarter.

Richard Garriott is the creator of the Ultima series and quite the name to have attached to any RPG project, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that the game hit its target.

So what is Shroud of the Avatar? It’s an RPG that’s in a sort-of Ultima mould. It’s not Ultima as EA own that license (I’m waiting for the FPS reboot), but it is a Richard Garriott RPG as he explains here.

It all looks very old school, as can be seen in the snippet of game from the Kickstarter trailer, but I’ll be interested to see what Richard Garriott can bring with an RPG in this post-Dark Souls world…

Perhaps you’re a backer? Perhaps you have find memories of Ultima? Post your Lord British related memories below!

Shroud of the Avatar will be available for Windows PC sometime in the future.
