New-Screenshot-for-Torment-Tides-of-Numenera-ReleasedTorment: Tides of Numenera is on course to become the most funded video game Kickstarter of all-time(not including video game console Kickstarters, smart ass).

InXile were originally looking for $900,000, but are currently sitting pretty at over $3.3 million. The game is considered to be a spiritual successor to 1999’s Planescape: Torment and will use the Unity engine – as will their other Kickstarter success, Wasteland 2.

Today, the developer has released the Torment’s first official screenshot which shows off a beautiful 2D pre-rendered background. All environments in the game are created with this technique, whilst characters will are in 3D. As Lead Environment Artist Koy van Oteghem on the game said:

“Torment will certainly present some special challenges, but more so I think, unique opportunities to realize our vision in a new old way. We’re looking back to a 2D approach, with a fresh eye rooted in contemporary modeling, texturing, and engineering techniques.”

Kickstarter continues to break records with nearly every game project that comes up. When the Torment: Tides of Numenera campaign launched on March 6, it surpassed Ouya as the fastest Kickstarter to reach $1 million. Let’s just hope we hear about successes rather than failures once all of these projects become real products.

Update: The second screenshot has been released, and we’ve added it to the gallery below.
