Microsoft Confirm Xbox One is Region-locked

by on May 27, 2013

Xbox One owners will be purchasing titles in their own territories as a Microsoft rep told Digital Trends that their next-gen system will be region locked:

“Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale. We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One.”

In some countries, the option to import games would be a cheaper one, but there are iffy laws that prevent this for most cases. Microsoft’s two previous consoles were both region-locked, as were Nintendo’s Wii, Wii U and 3DS. Sony, on the other hand, bucked the trend with the PlayStation 3, even after the PlayStation and PS2 were locked.

As of right now, Sony hasn’t provided clarity on this particular situation with PlayStation 4.
