New Killer Instinct Was Microsoft’s Idea, Says Developer

by on June 15, 2013

When Microsoft announced that a “Historic Rare IP” was being brought back to Xbox One, fan speculation was rampant. While some mentioned Banjo-Kazooie or Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, Rare’s fighting series from the SNES and N64, seemed to be the fan favorite. When Killer Instinct was unveiled at E3, fans rejoiced that Rare brought the series back after more than decade.

The thing is, the primary development is being handled by Double Helix, not Rare. In an interview with Siliconera, Double Helix revealed Killer Instinct was Microsoft’s idea to bring back in the first place. Design Director, David Verfaille, said of Microsoft- “They had new hardware coming soon and were like, ‘the time is now, we gotta bring this back’. So we heard about the chance and jumped at it.” Combined with the announcement that Killer Instinct has gone freemium and Double Helix’s none-existant fighting game resume, there is some reason for worry. Hopefully, Killer Instinct will go back to its rootes, because I really need to reuse Sabre Wolf’s easy combos again.

Killer Instinct will be released for Xbox One in 2013.
