Ubisoft Companion Apps Work Without Retail Games

by on July 19, 2013

It has been revealed that gamers will not have to own the retail version of Tom Clancy’s The Division to be able to play the game’s companion app.

Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot spoke yesterday about companion apps for games such as The Division, Watch_Dogs and The Crew, which he said represent “low barriers to entry”.

“Our games are leveraging the accessibility brought by tablets and mobile touch interfaces. It will allow players to engage with our universes, wherever, whenever they want.

“For example, a player could be joining his friends on a mission in The Division using his tablet or mobile phone. He doesn’t need to be in the same location. He doesn’t need to own the console version of the game. He just needs to download the app.”

Guillemot doesn’t specifically mention whether other game apps will require the retail game or not, but it is implied and seems like it would be the case.
