Iwata Says Wii U’s Problem Isn’t The Price

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has all but put to rest suggestions that a price cut for the Wii U is on the cards.

Speaking to CVG’s Steve Boxer, Iwata said if price was the issue with his company’s latest home console then the cheaper Basic version would currently be outselling the Premium version.

He said: “If the price is actually an issue, then there is some contradiction between the current sales balance between the Basic and Premium versions of the Wii U.

“The basic version should have sold a lot, but the fact of the matter is that people are buying more of the premium version. So the issue is not there.”

To Iwata the solution is simple – provide killer software.

“I understand that the real issue is the lack of software, and the only solution is to provide the mass-market with a number of quality software titles.”

Last month Nintendo announced a quarterly profit despite awful sales of the Wii U, which sold only 160,000 consoles worldwide between April and June. More recently they announced that they are still selling Wii Us at a loss, which is probably the chief reason for there being no price cut.
