Call of Duty: Ghosts Extinction Mode Teased

by on October 27, 2013

The official Call of Duty Instagram account has posted a short video, tasking players to ‘Survive the Extinction’.

The video is for Call of Duty Ghosts, made clear by the now familiar skull logo. The human skull doesn’t stick around, as it quickly transforms into the dome of something more alien, red eyes glowing with clear menace.

Since this initial reveal several bits of information have surfaced. Charlie Intel have posted an image, apparently taken by someone with the game, showing the owner of said menacing skull – an Alien creature with similarities to Warhammer 40,000’s Tyranids or Starcraft’s Zerg race.

According to this leak, Extinction mode is unlocked by completing five campaign missions. I’ll be honest, if these aliens are part of Ghosts core narrative, then I’m suddenly much more interested in Call of Duty Ghosts.

This mode was sort-of-spoiled a while ago, actually, when Call of Duty Ghosts achievement list appeared. As you can see here, the achievements aren’t exactly quiet about the features of this four player co-op mode, which sounds a bit more Left 4 Dead than hopeless survival.

Considering the popularity of Zombies in the Treyarch Call of Duty games, it’s completely unsurprising to see Infinity Ward offering their own take on the format. Well, they tried in Modern Warfare 3, but the terrorist survival mode on offer there was so flavourless that it almost wasn’t worth bothering with. Fighting against hordes of Zerg-like aliens sounds much more interesting.

This is the sort of stuff that makes Call of Duty Ghosts far more endearing to those of us who have been diagnosed with franchise fatigue; it’s genuinely piqued my interest. Call of Duty Ghosts is released rather soon – 9 days no less – so I’ll be watching impressions on this Extinction mode with interest.

Here’s hoping for some dog versus alien action.
