Microsoft Might Be about to Remove Gold Paywall for Streaming Apps

by on May 13, 2014

Today’s rumour mill is buzzing with the news that Microsoft might be about to drop the paywall for streaming apps on Xbox One and 360.

Currently, you need an Xbox Live Gold account as well as a subscription to the various apps, such as Netflix, to use them.

To balance the switch, other content may be placed behind the paywall, but there’s no news on what this might be.

Sony and Nintendo have never charged for streaming services on their consoles. The growing popularity of devices such as Apple TV and ChromeCast are probably a factor in the decision as well.

If true, expect an announcement at E3. The Microsoft conference is 9 June.
