E3 2014: Nintendo Digital Event Round Up

With many wondering if Nintendo would be able to compete this year – those fears can now be well and truly put to rest. For those wanting to watch the action without spoilers for themselves, the entire Digital Event can be watched in its full glory below:

Starting off in hilarious self parodying claymation style was a great touch, and set the tone perfectly for what was to come.

Smash Bros Wii U

Claymation intro segued into a Dragon Ball style live action fight between Iwata and Reggie which revealed Mii’s as playable in Smash Bros. Miis come in three varietes – Mii Brawlers, Mii Swordfighters and Mii Gunners. Each type can choose four special moves from 12 different options, meaning that they are the most customisable characters.

A wealth of modes teased: trophy collections, story type mode, mini games, customisable online etc. This game is sadly no longer a summer 2014 title.

NFC ‘Amiibo’ figures announced

Characters data on each Amiibo figure transfers both from figure to Wii U and vice versa. This means that these NFC figures will constantly be updating and will grow as you use them with the various supported games.

In Smash Bros, they collect data based on your perfomance and your amiibo fighters level up as you use them.

Amiibo will be used in Mario Kart 8 – more details to be announced.

Yoshi’s Wooly World

Developed by Good Feel Inc, this stunning looking action platformer, looks like a cross between Epic Yarn and Little Big Planet. The game will focus on exploration, and focus on using his skills to explore the environment.  The game will support two player local multiplayer.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

Standalone platform/adventure game. Features gamepad screen use, 3D World types of environments and Luigi’s Mansion-esque worlds shown.

Zelda U

What we were all waiting for. Inspired by  the original Zelda, the latest in the series is no longer linear, and features an open approach to how you pursue objectives.  Like in the older games and the recent A Link Between Worlds you can choose what objectives or areas to tackle in any order you’d like. The graphical style the team has opted for is a slightly cel shaded one, and produces some truly gorgeous visuals.

Wii U Mario level maker, features touch screen controls and offers the player different visual options to use for their levels – you can use either the classic NES style or NSMBU graphical style.

Splatoon

A surprise new IP and Nintendo’s first forray into the third person shooter genre. Boasting 8 player online action.  Characters attack with Ink, but can traverse the sky as squids. Terrority based online shooter, based on players inking areas to take control of the map. Uses gamepad’s screen as a map, actively showing which areas players have taken control of. Gyro controls also used to help aiming.

Reggie teases fans with one more announcement. We are then treated toa  gorgeous anime styled Kid Icaus and Hyrule crossover. It is then revealed that Kid Icarus’ Palutena will be joining the fight.
