Mario Kart 8 Sells more than 1.2 Million in First Weekend

by on June 3, 2014

Nintendo has today reported that Mario Kart 8 sold more than 1.2 million total units across Japan, Europe and America from Thursday, 29th May to Sunday, 1st June.

To put things in perspective, Wii U was hovering around 6-7 million console sales last we checked, meaning that Mario Kart 8 has already sold to roughly 20% of the system’s install base, assuming it didn’t cause a considerable spike in system sales.

The question is, can it keep selling? Well, Adam was a fan in his review, and I must say that it’s probably the best the series has been in a long time, and arguably the best kart racer to date. Mario Kart 8 is a game that deserves every success it gets.

Hopefully Nintendo can ride this wave of good feelings into next week’s E3

Currently of course it’s the lowest selling kart title – unsurprising, it’s only just come out – but to put things in perspective, the lowest selling title in the franchise is Mario Kart: Super Circuit, which sits at 5.91 million sales. Some sceptics would say that Mario Kart 8 might even struggle to get half of that…

Meanwhile the best selling are Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii with 23.56 million and 35.53 million worldwide sales respectively. The franchise has sold more than 100 million units altogether.

What do you think of Mario Kart 8? And how much do you think it can really do for Nintendo’s ailing system?
