Sponsored: A look at 3 awesome games based on not-so-great movies

With the gaming industry growing rapidly in Africa, there is a lot of room to learn from international developers who have adapted average movies into popular games. In South Africa most of the gaming jobs are in Cape Town, and the developers find themselves in need of inspiration to impress the gaming community.

Some of our favourite and classic video games are based on movies that have very weak storylines and bad acting. Some of these movies have their weak storylines through awesome video games, the three that stand out are Resident Evil, Hitman and Max Payne.

  1. Resident Evil

Paul WS Anderson’s horror movie Resident Evil is considered utter garbage by most movie critiques but since 2002 GameCube has made vast improvements to the game. The game offers a challenge in resource management, the rooms are amazing, the puzzles are intricate and the zombies are awesome. There is always danger lurking and you have to use ammunition wisely, making the game borderline addictive as the gamer tries to stay alive. The recently remastered version is aesthetically pleasing, you can choose between aspect ratios (4:3 and 16:9) and can alternate between the traditional tank style controls and a more modern set up.

  1. Hitman

Hitman is probably the most humourless film you will ever see but you can easily spend six months focused on completing each episode of the game. The settings are creative and intriguing including scenes in Paris and Italy and the game is weighty and satisfying from the moment a gamer begins.

  1. Max Payne

This clichéd movie was translated into an intriguing gaming package instead of the movie which seemed like it was derived from existing Hollywood action movie trash. The game has been a favourite amongst gamers and has been positively received by the gaming community and even won quite a few accolades including the 2011 BAFTA Award. The game has sold over 7.5 million copies which is more than we can say for the movie itself.
