Great-Looking New Games Coming Out in 2018

by on January 11, 2018

2017 blessed the gaming community with a bounty of incredible new games, and 2018 looks poised and ready to do the same. If you still have a backlog of games to get through, you’d better stretch out your thumbs and tune up your controllers because the horizon is shining bright, my friends.

This list of exciting games to look forward to in 2018 only scratches the surface. There are still many mobile games, indie games, and games that haven’t been officially announced (can you say “Call of Duty”?), Here are some of the tastiest-looking games this year has to offer, in no particular order.

1) Red Dead Redemption 2 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4)

Rockstar hit a grand slam with Red Dead Redemption, seamlessly implementing GTA gameplay into a Wild West universe. The second installment is not a sequel, but a prequel. Fans can expect all of the gun-totin’, horse-stealin’, rattlesnake-shootin’ fun of its predecessor, but in all likelihood a bigger and better way. Polish your pistol and oil your boots because this one’s going to be a wild ride.

2) Secret of Mana (PS4, PS Vita, PC)

Alongside classics such as Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Terranigma, and Lufia, Secret of Mana is one of the elite JRPGs that emerged during the great Super Nintendo awesome game spree of the early-to-mid 90s. In February, a full remake will be available on PS4, PS Vita, and PC.

This is far from just a remastered version of the old favorite. Players will be treated to a new 3D world, all new graphics, and even new additions to the already-beautiful musical score. It’s not all changes though — that snappy, intuitive gameplay is still fully intact. The beloved multiplayer mode is still there too, so call up a gamer pal and start a quest like it’s 1993 all over again.

3) Soul Calibur VI (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC)

Although the last Soul Calibur game wasn’t a huge hit, fans of the weapons-based fighting series have big hopes for the next installment. After six years of teasing, Bandai Namco finally made it official: Soul Calibur VI is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018, right in time for the franchise’s 20th anniversary. This game is produced by Motohiro Okub who also produced Tekken 7, and it runs on Unreal Engine 4. Excited? Me too.

4) Detroit: Become Human (PlayStation 4)

David Cage of Quantic Dream (Omikron: The Nomad Soul, Fahrenheit, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls) wrote this game. “Nuff said.

…Okay fine. This PS4 exclusive looks to be the Ex Machina of video games (referring to the film, not Deus Ex), with the premise focusing on AI servants becoming sentient. What could possibly go wrong?. The game may not be for the faint of heart, having already generated controversy pertaining to some particularly violent scenes and dark themes.

The game looks to offer excellent replay value, as there are multiple characters to choose from, and they’re mortal with the potential to perish if you make a wrong decision. Fans of narrative and choice-driven gameplay into branching paths should be thrilled to take this next David Cage game for a spin.

5) Anthem (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC)

From BioWare, the makers of the exceptional Mass Effect trilogy comes the much-anticipated Anthem. It’s been described as an online shared-world multiplayer action role-playing game set in a rich sci-fi universe. It’s also been compared to a blend of Mass Effect, Titanfall, and Destiny.

The basic premise is that players called Freelancers wear specialized customizable exosuits called Javelins that facilitate superhuman abilities and fighting methods. You explore ever-changing terrains and fight aliens, beasts, and marauders. You can have as many as four squad members on your team, or you can play single player if you prefer.

6) God of War (PlayStation 4)

The succinctly titled God of War is the eighth installment to the series and the sequel to 2010’s God of War III. The previous God of War games were based on Greek mythology, but this one changes up the formula using Norse mythology instead. The main protagonist, Kratos is back, only now he has a son named Atreus who he must teach and protect.

The gameplay has been reconfigured from the ground up, but it still remains as accessible as the past installments. The soundtrack is by Bear McReary of Battlestar Galactica and Walking Dead fame, so we can naturally expect an epic score. The plot has been reported to be more complex than past God of War games, promising a new level of emotion and immersion to an already stellar series.

7) Yoshi (Title TBA) (Nintendo Switch)

Nintendo’s new platform has a title for favorite characters like Mario, Zelda/Link, and Bomberman, but not Yoshi — until now that is. Very little is known about the upcoming Yoshi game, including its title.

What we do know is that it’s a side-scrolling platformer with the ability to flip the camera and see what’s hiding on the other side of the screen. The idea sounds intriguing, adding a new dimension to the classic genre. A Kirby game is in the works for 2018 too, so this year looks to be an exciting one for well-loved Nintendo characters.
