Alienware OptX AW2310 23″ 3D Full HD Widescreen Monitor

by on February 1, 2010

So we’ve been ranting about 3D on our podcast, reviews and private blogs for quite a while now. Most of us share the view that 3D is the next HD, at least in the gaming sector, if not with mainstream consumers.

There’s a growing number of 3D movies in the cinemas and 3D games on display at conventions which is building a hype around the subject – but there seems to be a delay with these products actually reaching the home. We expect that to change this year. ‘Twenten’ will be the year of 3D.

Dell kicked things off nicely with their announcement of the first Alienware 3D/HD monitor at CES last month. We were lucky enough to get to play on one of these screens first hand – and we can tell you, you’re in for a gaming treat. Imagine all your usual 1080p HD gaming but with some intense 3D field-of-visions. We can’t tell you how good it looks, you really have to experience this for yourselves.

The downside is that you will still need an nVidia 3D Vision peripheral to view 3D content. That’s because technically there’s nothing ‘3D’ about 3D monitors, what it really means is that they have a refresh rate of at least 120hz (as opposed to standard 60hz), which is what is needed to view 3D content with nVidia’s 3D Vision glasses.

The Alienware OptX™ AW2310 23″ 3D Full HD Widescreen Monitor is Available from Dell (UK LinkUS Link) for a wallet-slapping £448.56 / $469  (inc. free delivery). Seems the UK is the victim of the cross-Atlantic tax that seems to be standard now in the gaming/tech industry.

nVidia’s 3D Vision glasses kit is available from Amazon (UK linkUS link) at the very reasonable price of £117.48 / $189.99.
