Adventure Gamers rejoice, British-based studio Revolution Software has announced the release of a remastered version of classic 1997 point and click adventure game Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror. The follow-up to Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars – which enjoyed a Director’s Cut re-release last year across PC and Apple platforms, as well as Nintendo DS and Wii versions. The new title has only been announced for release on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad so far, due out before Christmas.

In the same fashion as update of the first game in the series, Broken Sword 2 will feature fully animated facial expressions, illustrated by Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons, improved background and animation graphics, improved cut scenes, high quality music, and a context-sensitive hint system and diary. Additional to those functions, the new release will also utilise “dropbox” integration, allowing for cloud saving – a feature which will be recognisable to Steam users, enabling gamers to play the same adventure across multiple devices. Game Centre integration allows in-game achievements.

The game features protagonists George Stobbart – a hapless American tourist – and journalist Nico Collard, as they become entangled in a web of intrigue and deception, linked to an ancient Mayan artefact. A chase across several countries ensures as the couple try to foil a drug ring and solve the a mystery that threatens humanity itself.

Revolution Managing Director Charles Cecil states, “the original Broken Sword went to number one in the App store, was BAFTA-nominated and received the most fantastic reviews, both from reviewers and the game’s audience on the App store – as well as appealing to fans of the series, the game reached a whole new audience.”

“Publishing through the App Store has offered extraordinary opportunities. As well as allowing us to communicate directly with our audience, we are now in the position where we can re-work our original games while simultaneously writing new adventure titles. It is an extraordinary time for the games industry and for independent developers in particular.” This suggests that perhaps console-based releases of this title will be unlikely.
