Sony Planning To Use Virtual Reality?

by on July 19, 2011

If you’ve been listening to our Podcasts this season (Episode 4 is out now!), then you will hear that one of the team wanted Virtual Reality to make a re-occurance, and with Sony pushing 3D technology for the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft potentially adding 3D gaming for the Xbox 360, it may be the next logical progression for gaming tech in general. Although it may not have taken off way back in the day and some people dismissed it as a fad, you could argue the same sentence was cast with regards to 3D. Look where that is going now!

Well it seems that Sony are tinkering with the idea of adapting VR. Sony have confirmed that they are playing around in their R&D Department to see what they can achieve and obviously if it is marketable. The chief of Sony London Studios, who goes by the name of Mick Hocking, has admitted that not only are they testing out VR but that they may have some genuine surprises for the gaming world.

“We’re working with a couple of games at Sony that are experimenting with virtual reality-type experiences. We’ve also got a new head mounted display that we showed at CES, that can produce really great quality 3D and a very immersive experience for games. The head-mounted display has twin-OLED screens; very high quality.”

“At the moment it’s just a head-mounted display; the head isn’t being tracked – but that’s something we’re doing R&D on,” he added. “I have to say, what we’ve done in the R&D projects has just been fantastic.”

Does this sound intriguing to you? It certainly does to us! This obviously now leaves us with a bucket load of questions, so be sure to keep posted to God is a Geek.com for any further developments with this story.
