grand theft auto 3 anniversaryOn Saturday October 22nd, Rockstar Games will be celebrating the ten-year Anniversary of the game that revolutionised sandbox videogaming. Grand Theft Auto III was first released a decade ago and its influence is still being felt throughout modern gaming.

Last week, Rockstar founder Sam Houser announced that the company were working on a special Anniversary edition re-release, that would be available on selected iOS and Android devices. In the build-up to that release, the development team have put together a new, nostalgic trailer for the title – that features action and cutscenes from the classic game.

Grand Theft Auto III revolutionised the series – taking it from being a top-down shooter, to a full-3D, open world environment. The cinematic qualities and production values were ahead of its time and unlike anything else on the market. Ever since its release, other publishers have been struggling to cath up with Rockstar Games, and Rockstar themselves have been refining the same winning formula seen in the title. It’ll be exciting to see what extra features are added for the mobile version of the game, and how the title holds up, ten years on.

Check out the new trailer below:

The Grand Theft Auto III Anniversary Edition has yet to be dated, but Rockstar Games have stated they will announce more details shortly. They also confirmed that the game will definitely be playabke on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.
