Xbox IllumiRoom Proof of Concept is Awesome Looking

Xbox-IllumiRoom-Proof-of-Concept-is-Awesome-LookingLet’s not beat about the bush here, “awesome looking” underplays how cool this looks. Sure it’s only proof of concept now, and looks like something from the future, but nonetheless, it looks great, because we’re big fans of immersion in video games.

Show during CES (and you can see the video below), the idea is to augment the area around the TV by projecting visualizations (so not necessarily graphics from within the game itself) that are supposed to “enhance the traditional living room entertainment experience”.

The IllumiRoom project uses a Kinect for Windows camera and a projector to accomplish this feat. It captures the geometry of the room using Kinect, to adapt the visuals in real-time, so there’s no need for pre-processing of the graphics. Apparently the video below is captured live and there’s not post-production taken place.

Impressive! What do you think, is it something you’d be interested in trying in your home?
