John Carmack Joins Oculus VR

He’s been a long time fan of the Oculus Rift, but today, the folks at Oculus VR announced that id Software’s co-founder will be joining them as Chief Technology Officer.

Leading development from Dallas, Texas, John Carmack will be helping to change the face of virtual reality and he’s obviously excited about the opportunity to do so:

“The dream of VR has been simmering in the background for decades, but now, the people and technologies are finally aligning to allow it to reach the potential we imagined. I’m extremely excited to make a mark in what I truly believe will be a transformative technology.”

However, Carmack won’t be leaving his current post at id. The studio contacted Polygon and informed them that the video game luminary will be staying on at id Software, too:

“John has long been interested in the work at Oculus VR and wishes to spend time on that project. The technical leadership he provides for games in development at id Software is unaffected.”

Highlighted as one of the true innovations in video games, Oculus have something special with the Rift. Whilst they are currently working on a HD version of the headset, anyone that has tried on the goggles in their current form has raved about them. With one of the medium’s truly great minds, things can only get better for the company.
