Steam Wants Your Money if You Want to Be Part of the Gang

Steam had made the unusual but sensible move to restrict access to certain features for those who have spent less than $5 in the Steam Store.
As Steam’s popularity increases, unfortunately the number of spam accounts being created has increased and its not unusual for active members in the Steam community to receive several spam ‘friend invites’ on a regular basis.
So in order to access any of the main community features, you have to have spent at least $5 directly with Steam. Retail purchases, gifts and CD Keys won’t count but for anyone who has had their Steam account for some time it would be unusual to have not bought anything in one of their wonderful and costly Steam Sales.
Seems like Steam’s promise to protect its community isn’t just hot air.
