More Nintendo Switch Online details revealed ahead of September 19 launch

by on September 14, 2018

Nintendo took the opportunity in the latest Direct to show off more information around their new Nintendo Switch Online service which officially launches on September 19, 2018.

Some of it was obvious, or what we’d heard before such as the ability to play NES games with added multiplayer functionality either in local or online multiplayer using Joy-Cons. Nintendo were a bit ambiguous by saying the NES library would be updated “regularly” with no commitment on what that meant yet.

Saved data will be stored in the cloud, and as before users can download a smartphone app to utilise voice chat in game. Nintendo marketed that background players can also join in, because apparently your husband or wife mocking you from the other side of the room to your online friends is now a “feature”.

Nintendo were then even more ambiguous by announcing there would be exclusive offers for members who take up the paid online service but neglected to say what these were, and that details would be revealed later, despite the fact we are only a week away from the service launching.

Multiple payment packages for the service are available depending on length of subscription and how many accounts you wish to be connected to the service. Check out the trailer below for more information:

To support the launch of Nintendo Online Service and to commemorate the inclusion of a NES back catalogue as part of the service, Nintendo also announced the release of specially made NES controllers that can be used in place of Joy-Cons for Nintendo Switch.

This will give you a more authentic feel when playing those retro NES games as part of the service, and can be ordered after the system launches next week
