Ubisoft Showcases New IP Gods & Monsters at E3

Every year, gamers all over the world look forward to E3 to see the unveils and in-depth showcasing of all the biggest upcoming games from many of the world’s most loved companies. E3 2019 was sullied early on when Sony announced that they would not be in attendance. Luckily, other developers and publishers stepped up to make the event exciting for all.

Among the new IP reveals was Ubisoft’s Gods & Monsters from the team that brought us the superb Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, per eurogamer.com. Already being well-versed in the themes of mythology and ancient civilisations, Ubisoft knows that we gamers love to immerse ourselves in the realms of deities and beasts from all over the world, and this game looks to give us a new, yet familiar, way to play alongside and against the characters of ancient Greek mythology.

Gods & Monsters looks like a great bit of fun

Unlike the Assassin’s Creed series, Gods & Monsters doesn’t boast absurdly lifelike graphics and brutal combat mechanisms; instead, it takes place in a colourful, painted, and vibrant world of open fields, white cliff faces, and blue skies. It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Gods & Monsters looks similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It’s certainly a step back from the tactical and violent ways of Assassin’s Creed but makes good use of its own combat system which indulges in mystical powers, as well as some elements of RPG-gaming and item crafting.

As detailed by polygon.com, the emphatic Zelda entry was the clear inspiration for the new Ubisoft title but will see the player’s customisable character, named Fenyx, take on the scheming creature Typhon as he and his monsters look to overthrow Zeus. Gamers all over the world love to immerse themselves in mythology in gaming, where gods, demons, monsters, and unique settings combine. Ubisoft is well-versed in this arena and hopes that their new game has a similar draw as the many other highly-rated games steeped in mythology from around the world.

Our love of mythology in gaming

If it manages to utilise the breadth of Greek mythology, Gods & Monsters could be an early hit for Ubisoft next year. It’s not difficult to see that the general gaming audience is drawn to games that explore mythology and put us in the middle of its stories. The Assassin’s Creed series has found revitalised success by going back to ancient Greece and ancient Egypt, but the French studio isn’t the only ones playing to our intrigue of the ancient world and its beliefs.

Sony Santa Monica’s God of War, which pulled the series’ protagonist Kratos from Greek to Norse mythology, was a tremendous hit and even beat the highly-anticipated and much-loved Red Dead Redemption 2 to the major game of the year awards. In the home of Norse mythology, Norway, the favourite casino of review site casinospiller.com sees many of its mythology-themed titles sit among its slots, including Rise of Olympus, Blaze of Ra, and Asgardian Stones.

In the reveal trailer of Gods & Monsters, you hear epic poet Homer tell you that the gods have turned to you for help. So far, two of these monsters have been seen. The unveil shows a slug-type creature with snakes for hair squirming around, which is likely a Medusa-like gorgon, as well as a harpy in flight and ready to strike. Of the many other creatures of Greek mythology, gamers will be hoping to see the likes of the Hydra, the Minotaur and possibly even a Chimera as a part of Typhon’s army.

Gods & Monsters comes to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia on 25th February 2020.
