J.J. Abrams returns to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, new release date announced

Disney has announced today that J.J. Abrams will return to direct the final part of the Star Wars saga, the currently untitled Episode IX.

After The Force Awakens’ huge success, many had hoped to see J.J. continue to be a part of the Star Wars universe in some way, shape, or form, and thankfully he has, taking over from formely appointed Director Colin Trevorrow who stepped down recently.

As well as announcing J.J. Abrams, Episode IX has a new release date. It will now hit cinemas on 20 December, 2019.

Thankfully we don’t have to wait that long for more Star Wars, as Episode VIII: The Last Jedi releases this Christmas on 15 December. You can watch the trailer below:
