BenQ EW2740L Monitor Review

by on September 20, 2014

The humble monitor is an integral part of the PC gamer’s arsenal, yet it’s something that’s always taken for granted and forgotten about. The right display can do wonders for your computer, and this offering from BenQ should be more than sufficient for your computing needs.

Design-wise, it’s a no-frills monitor with a slim bezel and rectangular base, mixing both matt and glossy black plastic. At the end of the day, you don’t want your output device to be too distracting from the content you’re watching on it, so the plain design is absolutely suitable. There are a few flaps at the front of the base that open up, creating a handy stand for your mobile phone.

In terms of inputs, a wide variety of sockets are available in which to plug in your various devices. You’ve got your D-Sub socket for connection to a PC, plus two HDMI ports to all manner of modern devices, and one of those is MHL enabled so you can connect certain mobile devices directly to the display for big screen viewing. Audio Line In and headphone jacks round off the connections nicely, and the built-in speakers are passable but as expected, quite tinny and in no way a replacement for a dedicated set of speakers.

Once you’ve connected your computer or other device, the EW2740L provides a wonderfully bright and sharp picture. For Macbook users, there’s even a M-book picture mode for colours that better mimic those on the displays of Apple laptops. At 27 inches, this is a huge screen that is incredibly useful for creative work such as photo or video editing.

Available for between £175-£200, this is a decent mid-priced monitor that offers a large-size and great performance at an affordable price. The on screen display menus are a little fiddly thanks to minimal labelling on the monitor’s buttons, but are fine once figured out. If you want a nice large display, you could do a lot worse than this one.
