Metal-Gear-Artist-Opens-GalleryYoji Shinkawa, long time artist on the Metal Gear franchise, has launched an online art program as a finale to the series’ 25th anniversary celebrations.

The board launches today, February 18, over at artstudio.metalgearsolid.com and gives users all of Yoji’s favourite tools – a complete set of digital brushes, pens and pencils, rulers, masking tape(!?) and various inks – with which to create their own works of Metal Gear Fanart.

All the art produced, both by the public and a number of guest doodlers, can be viewed online. Konami intends for this to become ‘the ultimate in fan art from users across the globe‘.

There will also be a number of competitions for budding artists to partake in. This week, February 18 to 24, asks visitors to draw their best Raiden in honour of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance finally being released this week. Upcoming competitions include Mechs and vehicles, Snake and Female Character categories.

To curb the amount of entries the gallery receives only four people may be drawing at any time. You can watch the current four artists drawing in real time, or just browse the tens of hundreds of scribbles already uploaded.

The quality on display is utterly astounding, and my abilities already feel substantially outclassed. But even if you’re not one with a talent for drawing, or even a fan of Kojima’s series, I urge you to check the gallery out. It’s a real testament to the imagination and creation that the Metal Gear series imbues in its fans.
