New Trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic – Rise of the Hutt Cartel DLC

New Trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic - Rise of the Hutt Cartel DLCStar Wars: The Old Republic may well have gone free to play now, but that isn’t going to stop any updates and expansions from being released and adding to the experience. In fact, the first digital expansion for the game will be released in Spring 2013.

The MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe – produced by Mass Effect and Dragon Age developers Bioware – hasn’t been the runaway success that it was hoped, yet the game still has a large installed userbase who will lap up this extra content. Those who are full paying subscribers will be able to pick up the update for a cheaper price of $9.99, whereas those who joined in since the game has gone free to play will have to fork out a slightly higher price of $19.99.

The DLC pack will include additions such as:

INCREASED LEVEL CAP

Continue your Star Wars saga with a new level cap of 55! Earn new abilities, skill points, gear, and more as your character advances!

EXTEND YOUR STAR WARS SAGA

Experience new epic story content with fully-voiced cinematic conversations as players uncover the diabolical plot of the Hutt Cartel to become the new galactic superpower.

NEW PLANET: MAKEB

Explore a vibrant alien landscape as the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire fight for control over a powerful secret.

Do these changes sound excitingto you? Well there won’t be much longer to wait to experience the Hutt Cartel add-on, but there is still no confirmed release date for the pack. For now though, you tide yourself over and watch the new trailer for the DLC below:

I really want Star Wars: The Old Republic to be better than it is at the moment, hopefully this new expansion is the start of something better. We’ll have to wait and see.

The problem with this expansion is the image. Nobody knows what the gameplay will be like, so it would be unfair to judge, but I don’t think anyone can honestly say this looks exciting. Hutts? I would assert that Jabba wouldn’t make my list of most interesting characters in Star Wars. In the expanded universe, Hutts tend to be two-dimensional crime-lords. Is this going to bring old players back and entice new people into the game? I contest a Jedi vs Sith expansion would, perhaps (although this is a stretch and an absurd fantasy of mine), a KOTOR2-themed expansion. Bring back the horrors of war, personal journey and mature storylines that Obsidian did so well in that game.

The second thing, as someone who played the heck out of TOR in pre-launch and the month after, they don’t seem to be fixing the game’s biggest problem – lack of responsiveness to the player’s actions. The Sith Warrior storyline ended on a stalemate. It would be nice to see some consequences to some of the player’s choices, because so far there hasn’t been much. For other people, lack of good end-game raids and PVP might be the reason they unsubscribe – for me, it is all about the single-player stories, and I don’t see a reason to play through all the other classes when I know ultimately, the world isn’t mine to play around with – I have to share it. I guess this is why they shouldn’t have made it an MMO in the first place.

Apologies for the double post, I saw a mistake in my first message and I tried to delete it, seeing as I couldn’t edit it. Deleting it only removed my name, not the post.

You’ll never beat those cinematics that came out in the run up to the release of SWTOR. They made me pray that someone like, I don’t know, Disney would rescue Star Wars from George Lucas and dial it up a notch.

The Old Republic side of the Extended Universe is ripe for proper expansion, and not just in the sense of this MMO.

Unfortunately, being a savage and uncouth console gamer means I haven’t played this, but my love for the Old Republic makes me want to, even with the negative press.
