Kinect Has Become More Accurate Since Launch, Says Microsoft

by on June 30, 2011

Microsoft’s Kinect is hugely successful. The motion capture device has sold millions around the world since its launch and its popularity is showing little signs of slowing.

That’s not to say Microsoft have just left Kinect as it was since it was released. Xbox Senior Product Manager David Dennis told Eurogamer that the accuracy of Kinect has improved, and stated that the new games shown using the device at E3 recently are evidence of that.

“I think like we showed at E3, like Kudo showed with Kinect Fun Labs – a lot of that tech is the advancements we’ve made in the accuracy, the tracking… being able to show finger tracking in the sparkles demo.” Said Dennis.

“You saw too with Ubisoft’s gunsmith demo [for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier] he was using his hand to fire in the firing range mode. I think that’s the kind of thing we’re going to continue to iterate on.”

“That’s the beauty of Xbox. We’ve been doing that with Xbox 360, starting three or four years ago, continuing to deploy new software updates to improve the functionality, like enabling finger tracking and voice search, and also to bring new partners like Netflix on.”

It’s good to see that Microsoft has been updating Kinect to make it more accurate. Such updates will open the technology to more intricate gestures, which gives developers a lot more room to innovate with the games that are being created for Kinect.
