Modern Warfare 2 (EPIC) Launch

by on November 10, 2009

Recession, what recession? Last night’s launch of Modern Warfare 2 was the most extravagant games launch in history. Activision are really trying to prove that Video Games are right up there on parr with the Movie Industry.

London’s West End was a buzz last night with hype of what is being coined the most anticipated game ‘ever’. Starting with a demonstration and presentation in Leicester Square’s Vue Cinema, you would be forgiven for confusing this game launch with a film premiere. Not only was there a ‘camauflage carpet’ with respective press and celebrity entrances, but the entire square was surrounded by ‘soldiers’, troup carriers and military jeeps. Activitsion really pulled out all the stops for this one.

After the premiere, the general public were getting ready for a midnight opening at HMV – to be amongst the first to purchase the game. Even in the dark, cold, English weather you could feel the excitement in the air, while people queued up around Piccadilly Circus.

While this was going on, celebrities and VIPs were headed to a ‘secret underground bunker’ for the VIP after party.

The GodisaGeek.com team were lucky enough to attend this VIP after party, and all I can say is WOW! It looks like the entire UK music scene are gamers, because everyone who is anyone was at this event. I alone met; Goldie, Lethal Bizzle, Sway, DJ Semtex, Dizzee Rascal  and Billy Murray (aka Johnny Allen from EastEnders).

Activision weren’t joking about this being an underground bunker. In an undisclosed West London location, there was an open bar, plenty and nibbles, and lots of xbox360 booths with MW2 ready to play. In the main hall, above the dance floor was a huge timer, counting down until midnight. I almost thought it was a New Years party when I walked in. When the clock struck midnight, there was a huge bang, followed by a short promo video for MW2, then Dizzee Rascal jumped on stage and did a full-on gig. Amazing.

When we’d done mingling with celebs and partying to DR, we headed home with free copies of the game. We’re going to be giving you guys a chance to win them over the next few days, so keep an eye on the homepage.

Activision sure as hell know how to throw a party. They launched this game like it was the biggest blockbuster movie of the year. Well played, wp.
