Super Mario Galaxy Stage Revealed for Smash Bros. Wii U

by on November 16, 2013

Yesterday’s daily image for Super Smash Bros Wii U featured a new stage taken straight from Mario’s recent gravity meddling hop-fests.

This Super Mario Galaxy stage features numerous homages to the games, including the Starship Mario HUB from Galaxy 2, and one of Bowser’s many Airships.

Of greater note is that the gravitational pull of the planet is in full effect. If we employ our super sophisticated image exploder and annotation technology, you can clearly see Samus’ charge shot following the curve of the planet after being reflecting by Mario’s cape.

Well that, and Sakurai himself said ‘The pull of gravity emanates from the center of the planet, so this will require using brand-new tactics.’ So yeah. Gravity.

What this one image doesn’t show is the scope of the stage. If it’s simply a curved arena with the usual territorial barriers then that’s one thing, but what if it’s a full sphere? What if it’s something more like Brinstar Depths from Super Smash Bros Melee?

If it went all the way around then yes, that certainly changes the game significantly. Forward smashes will lose effectiveness, while spikes (which, considering Link now sports a spike on his down air, appear to be more important than ever) wouldn’t come into play so much as all downs lead to the planet.

One revelation, and yet so many questions. Oh Sakurai, you wonderful tease…

So on that subject, what other new stages would you like to see? I’m still rooting for a Xenoblade inspired ring.
