Skype Will Be Available on PS Vita from Tomorrow

Skype Will Be Available on PS Vita from TomorrowSince launch, the PS Vita has been lacking a bit in the games department. A handful of titles have come out after it dropped on the 22nd February, but nothing that can be seen as the killer app. Today is no different, but…at least it’s something. Skype have announced, through the PlayStation Blog, that Skype Video and Voice calling will be available on the PS Vita through the Skype app, which will be free from the “Media & AppsSocial” category on PSN. The app will work on 3G and Wi-Fi models, but some countries do require a Wi-Fi connection to make and receive calls.

The app is the same as the one on your smartphone or your laptop. You can make Skype-to-Skype calls in video or audio and you can dial mobiles or landlines if you have Skype credit. One nice feature is that Skype can run in the background while you are playing a game, so you won’t miss a message or phone call. While you are playing a game, a notification will come up on screen that will inform you that someone is trying to get in contact. However, some games do shut off incoming Skype calls while you are playing them, which is a shame.

If you have been reading the past two paragraphs thinking, “This is all well and good, but what the hell is Skype!?!” – which I’m sure you intelligent GiaG readers haven’t, but anyway – there is a video below that you can check out. Some professional gamer called Fatal1ty shows you how to use it. He thinks it’s great because, “My friends and I use Skype a lot. Talk strategy and give each other a hard time…”. So, if you want to give your friends a “hard time”, this news will make your day.
