Microsoft Set to Announce Indie Self-Publishing

by on July 24, 2013

Microsoft have come under a lot of criticism from the indie game community over the last few years over their stance on Indie publishing on Xbox 360. Before now, if you wanted to publish a game on Xbox, you needed to go through an expensive and complicated certification process, and if you weren’t friends with another big publisher, hand over the publishing duties to Microsoft themselves, giving them all the control.

According to Gameinformer, Microsoft will change this rule, allowing indie’s to publish games without a big publishing partner. What does this mean for the average gamer? In all likelihood, more games! Woo! What does it mean for the Indie community? Less headaches. Woo!

Developers will also be able to set their own prices and release dates, so things should become a little more competitive, which could lead to lower prices. Who knows? We could be on the verge of an Indie revolution…maybe.

Gameinformer have also “been told” that every Xbox One unit can be converted into a debug unit, meaning that instead of specific hardware units, MS can authorise a console ID to play pre-release code. Which is great for Journalists, bloggers and beta testers.

Today’s news, if proven to be accurate, is great news for the Independent developer community, and great for the Xbox One’s flagging PR campaign.
