PS4 Will Require a Day One Patch

by on October 25, 2013

Sony have revealed, via PS blog, that you’ll have to update your shiny new PS4 toversion 1.50 to access many of its features.

Remote play, second screen features, media sharing, streaming, party chat, and even the ability to play online are all features that will require you to upgrade your PS4 to version 1.50.

You’ll also need to access the Internet before you’re allowed to watch DVDs and Blu Rays.

Obviously most of those require the Internet anyway, so it’s not like you’ll have to go out of your way to snag the 300 MB download, but it’s a nice warning before the system’s North American release on 15 November.

Of course when Microsoft announced a day one patch, gamers went made.
Now Sony do the same – but no backlash.

    Where is the equality?

Of course, the headline is slightly misleading. The PS4 doesn’t actually “require” a patch on day 1, it just needs that patch to do anything more basic than playing a game.

I was somewhat tired when I scribbled the headline. As Rotmm says, it’s a day one ‘update’ to enable the online features, which is less demanding than a necessary Internet connection before the machine will even work.

Bit odd that you need to download the patch before you can watch a movie though. Bonkers.
