Red Dead Redemption Sequel On The Cards

by on July 31, 2013

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has strongly hinted that a sequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption is in the works.

Speaking during an earnings report held last night Zelnick spoke of the publisher’s desire to make long-running franchises out of series including Borderlands, Bioshock and Red Dead.

“Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises,” said Zelnick, “that’s the unique goal in the industry.”

It really really really isn’t, but please go on.

“Our competitors do not see it that way. Our competitors’ view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing, so you better make hay while the sun shines. Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent franchises.

“Outside of our business you can look at James Bond, for example. And it’s been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that’s the Red Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilization, for example.”

Earlier this year it was revealed that Borderlands 2 and Bioshock Infinite have sold 7 million and 4 million units respectively.

In its first two years Red Dead Redemption sold in excess of 13 million copies, making a sequel inevitable – but it seems now to have come one step closer to becoming a reality.

Don’t expect any official announcements until well after the release of Grand Theft Auto V however.
