Extended Street Fighter V Trailer Teases Gameplay Mechanics

by on December 14, 2014

Capcom revealed a new, extended gameplay trailer for Playstation exclusive Street Fighter V at the final of the Capcom Cup last night.

The trailer once more shows Ryu and Chun Li fighting on a rainy street scene that transitions into a café where they continue fighting.

There’s also a glimpse of quiff having, shades loving friend of Guile Charlie shown after the trailer, with the thought-dead-but-maybe-not character also sporting an Urien-like oval on his forehead.

The trailer features many curious elements that run deeper than mere visual flair. A block string at 46 seconds includes curious sounds making many people recall Street Fighter III’s Parry mechanic, while a punch at 51 seconds was used in a sort Killer Instinct combo breaker-like fashion in the live match played at the event (see 2:26).

What’s more, 0:58 seems to confirm the return of a Focus Attack Cancel style mechanic, with Ryu launching Chun Li via Shoryuken and then cancelling the animation to activate his electricity-style mechanic.

This power state was also confirmed, last night, to use your special meter as opposed to a separate, instinct style one as predicted earlier. The revenge meter, and thus revenge attacks, appear to return unaltered.

This said, the live match also threw another interesting element onto the table when Chun Li was not defeated by Hadouken chip damage in the first match (see 3:08). It’s also quite clear that Chun Li is using basic guarding, and not the same parry-style chime that occurs in the new trailer (as well as in the match at 3:00).

In fact, let’s look at that moment. At 3:00 we see Chun Li block an initial attack and then perform a faster block, with a chime effect, when struck by the Shoryuken. Chun Li appears to move sooner than she would after a normal block, but takes a bit of damage in the process.

It appears, right now, that Street Fighter V may well contain a Parry-like mechanic that allows you to sacrifice a chunk of health in exchange for an instant response. It wouldn’t quite create any Evo moment 37s, but if people aren’t getting chipped out (see above), then that doesn’t really matter, does it?

There’s likely far more to find between the trailer and gameplay (I haven’t even mentioned the noodle hat), but I for one can’t wait to hear about the mechanics in depth at some point soon.
