Capcom Reveals Street Fighter X Tekken

by on July 24, 2010

Remember Katsuhiro Harada and Yoshinori Ono standing side by side at Evolution 2010? Remember the speculation and rumours that ensued afterwards? Well it so happens those rumours were true. At Comic-Con the two producers once again stood side by side to make a duel announcement. Yes, as the title implies Street Fighter X Tekken is in development (pronounced Street fighter “cross” Tekken). The game will make use of the Super Street Fighter IV engine and will put the two giants of the fighting game genre against each other. It seems the game will feature a Tekken Tag-like game mechanic where you’ll be able to partake in 2v2 bouts with a tag-able partner to do crazy super combinations.

“As in Street Fighter IV, gameplay will feature fully realised 3D character models battling for domination in both new and familiar highly detailed 2D environments that are brought to life with engaging animations. In addition to modes such as Versus and Training that will feature new enhancements to make the fighting experience more in-depth and enjoyable, Street Fighter X Tekken will include Tag Team combat where players select two fighters to deliver knockout assist attacks and special combos.”

“Big whoop” I hear Tekken fans shout, “I play Tekken not Street Fighter”. Well in the second part of the unveiling Katsuhiro Harada revealed Tekken X Street Fighter is being developed by Namco Bandai using the Tekken 6 engine. So something for everyone then? Whether you like to lay the smack down on your opponent in the 2D arena or the 3D one, everyone should be catered to.

Yoshinori Ono concluded the unveiling stating that “This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”

Both titles will be released on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 but no estimated release date was given. So while you wait check out the new trailer and we will endeavour to keep you up to date.
